Last night’s sale of Contemporary Art brought $375 million, the highest auction total ever at Sotheby’s. Mark Rothko’s No. 1 (Royal Red and Blue) achieved the top price for the evening at $75.1 million, on a night that included auction records for Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Hans Hofmann, Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell and Wade Guyton. The sale also included records for a work-on-paper by Andy Warhol and for a painting by Takashi Murakami.
