HOLLYWOOD, 2008 - Gary Simmons
I’ve talked about Gary before, he’s a good friend, a great mentor, one of my favorite artists… add to that gossip news celeb.
A guest at one of Russell Simmons’ exclusive parties partially erased one of his chalkboard pieces worth $100,000 - that’s probably less than Kimora’s monthly velour allowance, but was enough to change the way Russell displayed his personal art collection, and land Gary in the NY Post, NY Daily News, even the antithesis of culture and art, Perez Hilton.

Steven and I are talking about the sometimes inevitable “oopsies” that happen regarding contemporary art.  Makes me feel a little better about not being able to afford that Dan Colen piece I like so much, because my housekeeper (because I could afford one) might scrape the gum off thinking I just had really rude friends who don’t understand what the bottom of a coffee table is for.

“There’s no gallerist like him. He can do anything…. Jeffrey (Deitch) is a good businessman and he really gets the art.”

    Dan Colen

Well if Dan Colen’s on board, by all means…

“One long wall of his apartment is lined with shelves on which he keeps his alphabetized collection of art books and binders cataloguing all of his work and Snow’s. “Because you never know what’s going to happen with Dash,” McGinley says and gets up on a ladder to pull down some of Snow’s old Polaroids.”

From an article about Dash Snow, Ryan McGinley and Dan Colen written in 2007.

Robert Longo Untitled (Shark 7) 2008
Sotheby’s Contemporary Art sales were last night (which saw an 81% sell through. Impressive) and today in New York.  Going through the results nothing really seemed to rock the boat, but there were a few surprises.

Robert Longo’s Shark (above) went for $206,000.  The pieces on the covers of the catalogues always go for a little bit more than I would expect (exposure) but I had no idea that his drawings were going for that much.  Really? Over $200k? Just seems overpriced.

Dan Colen’s pieces were doing exceptionally well.
It looks like someone just dumped all of there Calder pieces on the Day sale.

Christopher Wool got set himself a new record for his work at almost $2 million.
Kippenberger did surprisingly well, but I guess he did have two major museum shows this year.
I hear Larry was being Larry.

So I guess in this situation, no news is good news.  Not that this isn’t news, it’s just status quo.

Are my fears coming true? I just received this from one of my favorite galleries in Los Angeles, Peres Projects, I know they opened a new location but still.

Peres Projects, Chinatown, Los Angeles will close to the public upon the end of “Sack of Bones.” Please join us for a closing reception for the current exhibition and the gallery.
Javier Peres is pleased to present SACK OF BONES, a group exhibition featuring: Jack Goldstein, Dan Colen, Tara Delong, Dash Snow, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Neil Jenney, Mark Flood, Bill Hayden, George Herms, H.C. Westermann, Bruce LaBruce, Daniel McDonald, Andrew Rogers, Arsen Roje, Agathe Snow, William C. Taylor, Donald Urquhart, Oscar Tuazon, Eli Hansen, Kaari Upson, Sebastian Mlynarski and Banks Violette.
The exhibition as a whole may appear deadpan, satirical or pathetic – in any case each of the constituent works turns its back on complacency, and, in doing so, becomes material evidence of resistance (kicking from within the sack). In other words, with all that is stacked against the mutinous artist and the mutinous viewer, hope could lie in objecthood itself.
Sack of Bones (Los Angeles)” will be on view at Peres Projects (969 Chung King Rd, Los Angleles 90012) December 13 through December 20, 2008, T-Sat 11am-6pm.
