Mary Corse Untitled (White Inner Band, Beveled), 2008
The Pacific Standard Time trickle down has begun. Just got an email that Mary Corse was picked up by Lehmann Maupin in New York. As far as I know she was only represented by Ace Gallery (OMG Douglas Chrismas is making SO much money off of this) and Lehmann Maupin? Solid win.
I wonder who is next? Are our local favorites going to be as popular and widespread as minimalist favorites Donald Judd and Dan Flavin? I’m very interested in seeing how this plays out for Southern California artists over the next 5 years. Besides the immediate auction price boosts, I predict retrospectives for DeWain Valentine, John Baldessari, Robert Irwin (at a museum somewhere other than San Diego) and more international interest in including such artists in group shows. I wonder if this will also increase focus on some of the younger Southern California artists, while they might not be as a cohesive of a group, I think that people will start to recognize that this is a very creative and artistic hub with a different perspective than say NY or Berlin.* I have a feeling that people, collectors, curators, dealers, et al. will not want to miss this train…again.**
*BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS!!!
**WHY IS DOUG CHRISMAS ALWAYS AHEAD OF THE GAME!!! I mean seriously!? He recognized this in it’s infancy. Say what you want, but that man is too brilliant at recognizing and nurturing talent.
“[Ed] Ruscha I know….I’ll be looking into the other artists you’ve mentioned, I’ve got them written down.”

If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be crying in the corner.
John Baldessari haunts Jason Schwartzman.
Pacific Standard Time is really doing some fun campaigning. Pandering to LA’s celebrity culture, sure, but fun nonetheless.
