Jordan Eagles BAR 1-9, 2009 (installation view)

He makes these by preserving the blood on plexiglass.  If you had just told me about this piece I would have probably rolled my eyes at you and complained about what a boring idea, but actually looking at the pieces, it’s really quite beautiful.

Mark Quinn looking at his self portrait, Self 2006 (I’m assuming it’s 2006 because of the wrinkles on the portrait)

It’s up at the National Portrait Gallery right now and he’s doing a talk…

Why don’t I live in London?

Art crush of the day: Anya Gallaccio Red on White 1993
This is made with 1/2 gallon of blood, glass and garnished with rock salt.  I am now in a bloody mood b/c I am going to see Twilight in just a bit.  Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it tomorrow with an all revealing review until at least next week when the people who care will have a chance to see it.

    Mark Quinn Self, 1991, 1996, 2001.

The portrait the NPG wants to acquire was made in 2006, depicting the artist with noticeably more mature features than the 1991 original. The Art Fund has offered £100,000 and the NPG has raised a further £50,000, which means an extra £200,000 is needed. Chief curator Jacob Simon describes it as an “iconic” work of the YBAs. via

I love this piece, I am 99% sure I saw the 1991 Self(1% it could have been 1996) at Saatchi a few years back and I can’t help but wonder what the costs are for keeping it at the proper temperature and how one would arrange transportation.  What if the power goes out?  Unfortunately, I am entirely too much of a nervous person, that even if I had the money, to purchase a piece that would require such meticulous upkeep.  I don’t know what I would do if it melted? “Hey Mark.  You know that piece I bought from you? Yeah, the self-portrait…uh…it melted.”
