Leaps into the Void: Documents of Nouveau Realist Performance

Pyrotechnics, exploding pigment, blowtorches, lacerated décollage, and found materials, define the radical gestures of the avant-garde movement, Nouveau Réalisme. Translated as “New Realism,” it was founded by art critic Pierre Restany and artist Yves Klein in Paris in 1960. The circle of artists formally and informally associated with the movement included Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Martial Raysse, Christo, Mimmo Rotella and Arman, among others. They believed direct and aggressive physical explorations, characterized by a paradoxical emphasis on notions of deconstruction and accumulation, and the use of discarded materials from everyday life in the tradition of Dada, achieved a more truthful understanding of modern society in a moment of rising consumerism. As proclaimed in the First Manifesto of Nouveau Réalisme, “if one succeeds at reintegrating oneself with the real, one achieves transcendence, which is emotion, sentiment, and finally, poetry.” via…

Well, aren’t you Houstonites lucky? This is up at the Menil through August 9th.

    Maurizio Cattelan Untitled, 2003
I go to Houston once a year, and one of my favorite things about it is the Menil Collection.  Wouldn’t you know it? Not even 2 months after I leave they decide to have an exhibition of Maurizio Cattelan. What is up with that? Really Menil? REALLY?

Maurizio Cattelan at the Menil is the U.S. debut of recent large-scale works and site-specific installations as well as four new works. The artist’s first solo show in this country since 2003, it also marks his return to sculpture. In Cattelan’s sculpture, the ability of images to embody social issues – social, political, moral — is as daring as it is powerful.

Site-specific installations? Large-scale works? FOUR new works? Why you gotta play me like this Menil?
If you are a luckier person than I, and will be in Houston February 12-August 15, do me a favor? Go see the show. Take pictures*. Send them to me.  Just rub it in, I give you permission.
*Don’t get caught though.

    Menil Collection

Going to take a shower and make myself presentable (for the first time during my sojourn to Houston) and then off to the Menil Collection. A little Rothko, Flavin, and Twombly to pick up any rainy/dreary day. Especially Flavin! I apologize for any graininess in my cell phone pictures that are to follow!

Update: Ok, I didn’t get to take as many pictures as I liked because a#1. you aren’t allowed to take pictures and the security guards were giving me the evil eye and b#2. It started raining like crazy so we had to leave. I am hoping tomorrow we are going to try again if the weather allows.
