Skin Fruit opens at the New Museum tomorrow…

It’s never boring right? Skin Fruit opens at the New Museum tomorrow and I thought I would do a little round up of all the dramz. For your enjoyment:

    • Jeff Koons and Dakis Joannu are not available for interview.
    • What’s in a name?
    • “It would be hard to imagine a creamier puffier interview with a news-involved subject (Dakis Joannou) than this one from Chris Bors on Artinfo. Question: Given that it’s an embarrassment for Artinfo, why did they run it? (True: The mistake is the New Museum’s for doing the show, but Joannou is certainly involved.)” - Tyler Green
    • Charlie Finch is over it.
    • I didn’t realize that this qualifies as celebrity news.
    • Rich people do have cool stuff.

I will say this though, Skin Fruit is kind of a rad name for a show.

Jeff Koons Girl with Dolphin and Monkey 2006

So, BMW picked their new art car and they went with…JEFF KOONS!!! Ugh. Could you be more predictable and publicity hungry? No, you probably couldn’t. After all the great art cars of the past, especially Olafur Eliasson’s that I actually had the pleasure to see, this is super disappointing.  I will probably expand upon this later when I have had more caffeine.

Ugh, I’m in a foul mood now.

    Jeff Koons Rabbit

To celebrate the opening of Tate Modern’s major autumn exhibition “Pop Life: Art in a Material World,” a giant 53 foot (16 meter) helium balloon by Jeff Koons is being unveiled today at Covent Garden. It is the first time that Koons’s Rabbit balloon has been shown in the UK and its residency in the Market Building marks a new relationship between Covent Garden and Tate Modern.  via…

I like huge balloon sculptures, but my favorite at the Tate has to go to Paul McCarthy.

Jeff Koons Girl Woods (Dots) 2008

I actually kind of like this.  Weird.

Koons’ new paintings are opening at Gagosian Beverly Hills in November, which is confusing, because I could have sworn that the stupid bicycles were supposed to be there then?
Yeah. They were. Wonder what’s going on?  Does that mean no Aaron Young? Now I’m bummed.

“If people say they don’t like my work, I feel like a failure.”

    Jeff Koons

I wonder if Patti Smith is going to hear about this quote?

    Jeff Koons Monkey (Ladder) 2003
Last night Christie’s had their Post-War and Contemporary Art auction in London, and I’ll be honest, it was lackluster at best.  The top price for the night was the Koons (above) for a little less than its low-ball estimate of £1.4 million.  The most interesting part is that the pieces that showed the most interest in the crowd were pieces new to auction.  Pilar Ordovás, International Director and Deputy Chairman of Post-War and Contemporary Art, Christie’s Europe noticed that the “Private collectors were particularly drawn to works of art that were fresh to the market, such as the Burri and the de Kooning.”

Maybe I am reading into this too deeply, but this makes sense in my head.  In this market if you are going to spend the money on some art why get something that a friend of a friend is unloading and all of your fancy collector buddies have already seen? If I were to spend the money, I would want to at least get the satisfaction of my peers reaction to something that hasn’t “been around the block”.

    Jeff Koons Hanging Heart

Newsweek’s art critic Peter Plagens just wrote an interesting article about the parallels between Koons, the Bush Era, and the future after Bush is out of office.  It’s definitely worth a read, the metaphor gets a bit redundant, but we get a few of the always entertaining druggie like ramblings of Koons, like this classic “I believe that my art gets across the point that I’m in this morality theater trying to help the underdog.”
Really Jeff (yes, I am calling you Jeff from now on), I don’t think anyone is buying that anymore.  The underdog? Morality Theater? Seriously?  If you are serious, give me the name of your dealer because whatever you are on, I want in.
