    Andrei Molodkin Hope 2009

One awaits with interest a reaction to the BP spill by a patently political artist like Russia’s Andrei Molodkin, whose sculptures infused with crude oil question the commodity’s uneasy relationship with democracy and capitalism in the West. For the time being, though, many artists seem to be preferring a more sensual response, revelling in oil’s devastating allure and noirish indelibility.

I was just thinking about Molodkin the other day and was curious what he was working on.  It didn’t occur to me that it might be something reactionary to the BP spill, since it is so far away from his homeland, but now that I think about it I really hope he does produce something BP-related.

Andrei Molodkin, Iraqi Crude Oil in the form of Skull
If Molodkin gets his way and is able to form dead bodies into crude oil for his show it will be all that I can do to not attend one and pull a Soylent Green and start yelling “IT’S PEOPLE!!! IT’S PEOPLE!!!” and run out and collapse on the street.
This looks a little Mark Quinn-y, no?

» In case you were wondering...

Russian artist Andrei Molodkin still wants to turn dead bodies into oil for art works.
