LACMA is getting into the comic book business … sort of.
Today, the museum launched an online contest inviting fanboys and fangirls everywhere to submit their ideas for an L.A.-set comic book storyline featuring an original superhero or a villain. Contestants must send in three to five images of character designs and/or storyboards, plus a one-page synopsis of the plot.
According to the rules, the images must be in JPEG format, with dimensions up to 800 x 1000 pixels. (Each image file must not exceed 1 megabyte in size.) The deadline for the contest is Sept. 15.
LACMA is holding the contest in conjunction with its fall exhibition “Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India’s Comics,” which is tentatively set to open Oct. 17. The museum says the exhibition “will draw connections between ancient Indian epics and contemporary India’s booming comic book industry.” via…
Alright doodlers, get to it. Submissions and storyboards can be sent to unframed@lacma.org

Wilfredo Prieto Flag of Celebrity 2008
Prieto was the Cartier Award winner for 2008, recieving money to produce his sculpture that will be shown during last year’s Frieze Art Show and a 3 month residency at Gasworks.
Jordan Wolfson has just been announced as the recipient of the 2009 award, selected from over 400 applicants. I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to seeing what his work will be.

Kerstin Persson Pile of dirt with a painting on top, 2006, & Pile of dirt with a bowling ball on top, 2007
In case you are in Stockholm, Persson is showing at Bonniers Konsthall. With such straightforward names for such monumental installations, you know Persson is not messing around.

Jean Shin’s show Current Thread* is opening at the Smithsonian soon. It involves her taking trophies and rearranging the people on top to be doing differnet activities than just kicking the soccer ball or making the basket. I wish I was in DC to see this, but alas, I am not.
So Smithsonian heard my whining and made a Flickr pool of Shin installing and organizing the pieces! I love it when museums use the internet to their advantage (and for my viewing pleasure).
*Remember when I posted about how people could donate their trophies…I hope you did!
